Chinese Republic Period Solid Brass Dual Inkwell Case Decorated With Chased Four Claw Dragons In Relief On Every Side

Exceptionally well crafted solid brass Chinese Republic Period (Circa 1915) cube form dual Inkwell Case Decorated on all sides with four clawed dragons in high relief with skillfully chased detail.

Each of the four sides features a side view of a majestic imperial Chinese dragon in truly stunning relief with chased detailing such as the scales of the dragon, the clouds in the background and most importantly, the dragon's "Pearl of Wisdom".

On the lid of the cubic form case is a glorious full front on view of the Imperial dragon, like the sides, in stunning high relief with chased detailing except this view of the dragon displays it in all of its serpentine, reptilian imposition. Its antlers extending well above its head and it's whiskers like long tendrils emanate from his top lip and extend well below its lower jaw.

At the very center of this awe inspiring image is of course the dragon's Pearl of Wisdom. Around the edges of the lid there is a Greek Key Pattern, a common motif in Chinese art of the Qing Dynasty and Republic Periods.

Upon opening the lid which is lightly sprung to avoid snap closures, two cylindrical vessels sit suspended from a platform that sits at just below the level of the lid.

Truly a Master work of Chinese Republic Period metalwork, although intended for the West as is evident from the "Made In China" in archetypal Republic font on the base, the level of quality and the use of the four clawed dragons far exceeds that of goods destined for the West just a decade earlier.
